  • The Depth rehearses on Wednesday evenings 7:00 to 8:00pm at St Peter's Church, Hinguar Street, Shoebury SS3 9AN. Rehearsals are entertaining and fun, but we work hard too. Members are expected to attend 75% of rehearsals.

  • We are a supportive group of singers who share a passion for performing and a commitment to continuous improvement. We welcome like-minded individuals, whether they are experienced singers or people with a basic level of singing ability.

Membership is open to anyone aged 18 and above who is comfortable singing in the TTBB range. TTBB refers to the sections of a lower voices choir: tenor 1, tenor 2, bass 1 and bass 2. Singers in the highest section (tenor 1) are generally expected to have the ability to sing up to a high A (A4), while singers in the lowest section (bass) should be capable of singing down to a low E (E2). We are committed to working with singers to find the best fit within our choir.

  • The choir sings a wide variety of music, both in style and mood, helping to keep rehearsals and performances enjoyable, engaging and rewarding for our members.

As well as performing independently, the choir will also regularly collaborate with our upper voices choir, The Fifty, giving members the opportunity to take part in larger combined performances and experience an even broader range of music and choral sound.

  • We do use sheet music in rehearsals. There is no prerequisite for members to already possess the ability to read music, as we are able to teach you everything you need to know. However, we do expect members to actively work on developing these skills over time. Concerts are performed from memory.

  • We love to perform! There are concerts throughout the year and members are expected to take part in most of these performances.

  • No - The Depth will not perform choreographed movement as part of its repertoire. Our focus is on developing vocal performance, musicality and ensemble singing in a relaxed and supportive environment.

While our sister choir, The Fifty, does include movement in some performances, members of The Depth will never be required to take part in choreographed movement during joint performances.

  • Research has shown that singing in a choir is highly beneficial for both the body and the mind. Not only does it provide exercise for the brain and the body, but it also offers numerous advantages such as improved breathing, posture, and muscle tension. Moreover, it releases those feel-good chemicals, endorphins, which elevate our mood and reduce stress. Singing in a choir has also been shown to give us a sense of belonging and community. If you are looking to make new friends, we'd love to have you join us.

  • Of course! You are very welcome to sign up below to come along to a Wednesday rehearsal for free to properly meet us and try us out.

  • Currently, there are no auditions for new members.

  • £20 per month payable by bank transfer. This includes rehearsals during term time, 1-to-1 mentoring each term, sheet music, online rehearsal resources and regular performances.

  • Emma Lindsey is the Choral Director for The Depth and their sister choir, The Fifty.

She teaches singing and has an MA in Vocal Pedagogy. She performed with Crouch End Festival Chorus for ten years: highlights included Lord of the Rings in Concert and the First Night of the BBC Proms 2022 at the Royal Albert Hall, Ennio Morricone's final UK concert at the O2, as well as Christmas concerts with King's College, Cambridge, singing with Take That and recording at Abbey Road.

Locally, Emma is the Singing Convenor for the Southend Festival of Performing Arts and was previously the Chair of Trustees for Southend Boys' and Girls' Choirs.

She created Southend Vox Community and Chamber Choirs and co-founded Spelthorne Young Voices. Emma is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors and the American Choral Directors Association.
